On April 12, 2024, the Division of Florida Colleges received a Notice of Intent from North Florida College to develop a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Organizational Management and provided the Notice of Intent to the Commission for Independent Education. Under section 1007.33, Florida Statutes, state universities shall have 60 days following receipt of notice by the chancellor of the State University System to submit alternative proposals or objections to the proposed program. Following the 60-day period, private colleges and universities shall have 30 days to submit alternative proposals or objections. Objections or alternative proposals shall be submitted to the Division of Florida Colleges and must be considered by the State Board of Education in making its decision to approve or deny a Florida College System institution’s proposal.

The Staff of the Commission for Independent Education (CIE) in coordination with Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges (FAPSC) presented a review of current Florida requirements for practical and professional nursing programs on May 10th and 13th 2016. The webinar focused on required actions by schools, accreditation timelines, goals to achieve nursing program requirements, implications for future actions by regulatory and legislative bodies, and available assistance for institutions.

The 2009 Legislature directed OPPAGA to conduct a series of five annual reviews of the Board of Nursing’s administration of the program approval and accountability processes for nursing programs. This is the fourth report that addresses how nursing programs’ capacity, enrollment, and student outcomes have changed since the 2009 law took effect. OPPAGA will issue one more report on the program approval process and outcomes in 2015.

In accordance with the requirements of Florida law, Section 119.071, Florida Statutes, the Commission for Independent Education collects social security numbers only if specifically authorized by law or if imperative for the performance of the Commission’s duties and responsibilities.

The Commission for Independent Education has received information indicating the position of the United States Department of Education (US DOE) on Florida's licensure requirements as they relate to federal State Authorization regulations.
It is the Commission's position that institutions licensed by means of accreditation (LBMA) in Florida are not exempt from approval or the licensure requirements of the Commission based upon accreditation or any other exemption. Therefore, LBMA is a license and not an exemption.

Kessenick, Gamma & Free, L.L.P., evaluated the 50 states’ legislative schemes to determine which ones would currently meet the new federal regulations, CFR 34 §600.9(c) (Federal Register, page 66946). The memo provides that, after a cursory review of states’ legislative schemes, only 12 of the states will comply with the new federal regulations. Florida is listed as one of those 12 states. The reference to Florida is contained on page four.
