Black History Month Event

Tallahassee, FL, February 27, 2024 – Governor DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis held a reception at the Governor’s Residence in celebration of Black History Month where they awarded the student and educator contest winners of this year’s Black History Month contests.

Each year the Florida Department of Education collaborates with Volunteer Florida, the Florida Lottery, and the Florida Prepaid College Foundation to put on a student art contest, essay contest and Excellence in Education Award contest in honor of Black History Month. Winners of the student art contest received a $100 gift card for school supplies and a one-year pass to Florida state parks while winners of the student essay contest received a two-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation and a $100 gift card for school supplies. Excellence in Education Award winners received a $2,500 monetary recognition provided by Volunteer Florida.
