Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. Announces November Books of the Month
Tallahassee, Fla., November 22, 2023 – Today, just one day before Thanksgiving, Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. announced November’s chosen books for the Commissioner’s Book of the Month, a monthly reading challenge to promote literacy and reading engagement in preK-12 schools. Each month, Commissioner Diaz highlights five recommended books – one per selected grade range.
“The November book recommendations will provide students an opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving and recognize the important contributions the first Americans made,” said Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. “Through this month’s selections, students will develop a deeper understanding of what makes our nation great.”
The Commissioner’s recommendations for November 2023 are:
- PreK – Thankful Thanksgiving by Deb Adamson
- K-2 – The Very First Americans by Cara Ashrose
- 3-5 – Fort Mose: And the Story of the Man Who Built the First Free Black Settlement in Colonial America by Glennette Tilley Turner
- 6-8 – The Adventures of Lewis and Clark by John Bakeless
- 9-12 – 1984 by George Orwell
The selections for each month can be found on the Commissioner’s Book of the Month page of the FDOE website.
