Indicator 11: Child Find

As part of a reasonably designed general supervision system under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), states are required to ensure that local educational agencies (LEAs) conduct timely initial evaluations to determine eligibility for special education services. Indicator 11 measures the percentage of children who were evaluated within the required timeline following receipt of parental consent. This indicator reflects a critical compliance requirement under Part B of the IDEA. It is closely tied to a state's responsibility to monitor LEAs, improve educational outcomes and ensure procedural safeguards are upheld. Through integrated monitoring activities, data system reviews and stakeholder engagement, states must verify that LEAs meet the regulatory timelines and correct any identified noncompliance promptly. Ensuring timely evaluations is essential for providing a free appropriate public education and for maintaining the integrity of the child find process.
