Florida Families Encouraged to take Advantage of Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday

Tallahassee, Fla., August 3, 2016 – As the new school year approaches, Florida families are getting ready by purchasing clothing and school supplies. Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart and Department of Revenue Executive Director Leon Biegalski are reminding citizens they can save money on these items through the 2016 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday August 5-7.

“Getting ready for the first day of school is an exciting time for Florida students and their families,” said Commissioner Stewart. “The Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday gives them an opportunity to save money while getting prepared for a successful school year.”

Department of Revenue Executive Director Leon Biegalski said, “For many years, Florida’s Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday has provided families the opportunity to purchase qualifying items without paying sales tax.  We provide the list of qualifying items and other information of interest on our website so that parents can plan ahead and save.”

The 2016 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday runs from Friday, August 5 through Sunday, August 7. During this time, qualifying clothing, footwear, and certain accessories selling for $60 or less per item and on certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item can be purchased without paying local and state sales tax.
