126 Florida Students Earn $2,500 National Merit Scholarships

Tallahassee, Fla., May 9, 2018 – Today, Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart congratulated 126 Florida high school students who earned $2,500 National Merit scholarships. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation awards these scholarships annually to students who demonstrate strong combinations of accomplishments, skills and potential to succeed in college.

The list of Florida’s National Merit Corporation $2,500 Scholarship winners can be found at National Merit (PDF).

“Today’s announcement is yet another example of the great work taking place in Florida classrooms,” said Commissioner Stewart. “These students deserve to be commended for their diligence, along with the educators who have provided them with the skills and knowledge to succeed. I appreciate the National Merit Scholarship Corporation rewarding these students and helping them as they prepare to begin the next phase of their educational journey.”

National Merit $2,500 awards are a one-time scholarship funded by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The recipients are chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. The scholarship can be used at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.

To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship Corporation scholarship, students must fulfill several requirements, including a detailed application that incorporates the student’s academic record throughout high school, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and honors and awards received. The student must also be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn an SAT score that confirms their earlier high performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Students are selected based on exceptional skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation is a not-for-profit organization established in 1955 to conduct the National Merit Scholarship Program. The scholarships honor the nation's scholastic champions and encourage the pursuit of academic excellence.
