View GalleryOn July 14, 2016, Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott announced Jessica Solano, a math teacher at Highlands Grove Elementary School in Polk County, as the 2017 Florida Department of Education/Macy’s Teacher of the Year. Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart and Dennis Witte, Macy’s Executive Vice President Regional Director of Stores, joined Governor Scott to make the announcement at the annual awards ceremony honoring the state’s top educators. View GalleryOn July 16, 2016, Ten Florida schools representing five regions were recognized with the Family and Community Involvement Award during the 2016 Florida Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Leadership Convention. The Family and Community Involvement Award is sponsored by the Florida Department of Education, Florida PTA, Wells Fargo and State Farm Insurance. It recognizes exemplary school practices that focus on increasing family involvement, welcoming families into the local school system, providing effective communication, supporting student success, and promoting collaboration with the community. View GalleryOn June 21, 2016, First Lady Ann Scott shared her passion for reading with students from the YMCA of Key Largo at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. This is the sixth consecutive year that the First Lady has participated in the Summer Literacy Adventure, an initiative to boost students’ interest in summer reading. The First Lady was joined by representatives from the Florida Department of Education, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Lottery. The Department of Environmental Protection generously provided state park passes for the student participants and a Florida Lottery sponsorship made it possible for all students to leave with a goody bag containing books and a reusable water bottle.
View GalleryOn February 8th, 2016, Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart named Rhonda Hunt from Eustis Heights Elementary School in Lake County as the 2016 Principal of the Year and Anne Bieber from Vero Beach High School in Indian River County as the 2016 Assistant Principal of the Year. These school leaders were honored during the annual Commissioner’s Summit for Principals in Orlando for contributing to increased student performance, safe learning environments and successful partnerships with parents and community members.
