Florida College System Chancellor to Recognize Innovation and Excellence

Lake Buena Vista, Fla., November 2, 2016 – Today, Florida College System (FCS) Chancellor Madeline Pumariega will recognize four colleges for innovation and excellence through the Chancellor’s Best Practice Awards. The colleges will be honored for programs of excellence during the Association of Florida Colleges’ 67th Annual Convention in Lake Buena Vista.

“The Chancellor’s Best Practice Awards is an opportunity for our colleges to showcase innovative program strategies that have proven successful at their colleges and in their communities,” said Chancellor Pumariega. “This award program recognizes these colleges for creating successful programs and then shares those best practices with all institutions in the Florida College System.”

Chancellor Pumariega recognized the following four colleges with the Chancellor’s Best Practice Award:

Broward College
Corporate Alliance Partnership Program - Case study, Memorial Healthcare System

The Corporate Alliance Partnership (CAP) program builds comprehensive, mutually beneficial relationships with employers to grow a stronger Broward community. Starting with a simple business relationship between a company and the college, CAP converts that contact into a sustainable partnership that aligns students to employers and builds a workforce pipeline to bridge the skills gap. The CAP between Broward College and Memorial Healthcare Systems (MHS) is an example of how deep relationships can support student success and meet employer demand.

Indian River State College
Cyber Security Institute

In response to the growing need for cyber security experts, Indian River State College created the Cyber Security Institute to develop a pipeline of certified graduates, educate interdisciplinary students, and increase awareness with local businesses and government organizations about cyber threats. The Institute revolves around the “Knowledge, Skills, Ability” training approach to both cyber degree-seeking students and students of any discipline. Graduates from the program are employed in variety of local industry and business sectors, including BHI Energy, Florida Power & Light, Pratt & Whitney, U.S. Sugar, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, and Harris Semiconductor.

Palm Beach State College
Center of Excellence in Medical Simulation

The Center of Excellence in Medical Simulation focuses on providing an alternative to clinical assignments for students enrolled in health sciences and public safety programs by using adult, pediatric and newborn patient simulators. Interdisciplinary student teams provide health care in a variety of simulated settings with a specific emphasis on the elderly and veterans with existing medical conditions. Since 2011, it has provided more than 4,613 simulations to 8,561 students in 1,428 classes in programs including registered nursing and other allied health programs.

South Florida State College
Optimizing Textbook Affordability via Open Educational Resources

South Florida State College’s strategic initiative, SFSCopen, promotes and institutionalizes the use of open educational resources (OER) that reside in the public domain or permit free use and re-purposing by others. Studies have shown that students in courses using OER often show higher grades, increased number of courses taken, and reduced drop rates than when in courses with traditional textbooks. South Florida State College faculty, in several key areas (psychology, first-year experience, and chemistry), have already adopted OER textbooks in their courses, resulting in an annual net cost savings to students of $125,480.

“I applaud our colleges for their commitment to excellence and innovation in our system,” continued Chancellor Pumariega. “It is this commitment that keeps the Florida College System in the forefront as a national leader in higher education.”
