Apprenticeship Success Stories
Construction Technology Careers
The Construction Technology Careers (CTS) initiative, a registered preapprenticeship program, received the Theodore Small Award at the National Association of Workforce Boards conference in Washington D.C. during the first week in March of 2005. The award was one of only four in this category for workforce boards throughout the country; the award emphasized program innovation and excellence.
As a registered preapprenticeship program, CTC has a direct functioning link, to four year registered apprenticeship programs. This represents a career ladder that starts in the secondary school environment and leads to three and four year training programs that complete high paid journeymen in various construction related occupations. The curriculum is coordinated to such a degree that credit is offered those students who go on to participate in a registered apprenticeship program.
Students attend part of their day at their high school and the other part at either Manatee Technical Institute, or Sarasota County Technical Institute. With direct assistance from participating apprenticeship programs, 36 construction companies, and trade associations, join with two school districts, and the Suncoast Workforce Board, Inc. to form the CTC. The CTC functions under a council which is representative of all the partners; the present council chair is Mark Kennell of WG Mills, the vice chair is Jay Brady of the Gulf Coast Builders Exchange and the CTC coordinator is Kristey Richardson.
Congratulations are in order for CTS for organizing such a unique representative partnership that relies on private sector business, local educational agencies, and the Suncoast Workforce Board, Inc. The Theodore Small Award is well deserved.
