Apprenticeship Success Stories

JEA Journeymen Ranked Overall "Best of the Best"

Two hundred ten - three (3) men Journeymen teams from around the country competed in the 2013 International Lineman's Rodeo, on Saturday, October 19, in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Companies from nearly every state and several foreign countries, including Canada, England, the Philippines, Jamaica, and Ireland have competed over the years. This was its 30th annual event. The JEA Journeymen Team of Michael Corbitt, Jr., Robert Hess and Brian Gregg placed first in the "Overall Best of the Best". Corbitt is June 19, 2005 graduate from the JEA IJW registered apprenticeship program, Hess is an August 24, 2007 graduate from the Southeast Line Contractors Apprenticeship Training (SELCAT) JAC registered apprenticeship program, and Gregg is a January 22, 2012 graduate from the JEA IJW registered apprenticeship program.

JEA team took 1st place in the Municipal Division, while the team of Dan Prescott, John J. Sabo III and Greg Johnson placed 2nd in the competition. Sabo completed the JEA registered apprenticeship program on June 25, 2005, and Johnson completed on April 28, 2001.

These Journeymen teams competed in four different events, such as the "Pole Climb", the "Hurt Man Rescue", and two different "Mystery Events".

There were 219 Apprentices who competed in the Rodeo this year. Fourth year apprentices Steven Taylor, David Poncher, Joshua Gregg and Gary Griffin were the JEA's apprentice contestants. David Poncher took 4th place in the "Apprentice Mystery Event", Steven Taylor took 9th place in the "Hurt Man Rescue", Joshua Gregg placed 17th in the "Pole Climb" and Gary Griffin took 18th in the "Apprentice CPR".

These Apprentice teams competed in five different events, such as the "Pole Climb", the "Hurt Man Rescue", "Mystery Event", "CPR" and a "Written Test".

Next year's International Rodeo will be held October 18, 2014; the Florida Lineman's Competition will be held March 29-30, 2014 in Ocala.
