About us

Troops to Teachers is a nationwide program that provides registered participants counseling and support services to help them prepare for a second career in teaching. The national office oversees the program, registers program participants, and disburses financial assistance to eligible participants. Each state office provides program participants with information regarding state certification requirements, programs leading to certification, the demand for teachers within the state, and how to identify and obtain a suitable teaching position.

Registered participants who are eligible for financial assistance may receive a stipend of up to $5,000 to pay for a certification program, or a bonus of $10,000 if they are hired in a high needs school. Troops to Teachers funds may not be used to pay the costs associated with earning an initial bachelor’s degree.

Individuals interested in the Troops to Teachers program may determine their eligibility and register online at the national Web site.

If you are interested in a teaching career in Florida, the Florida Department of Education has many resources available to assist you. The Florida Troops to Teachers office can familiarize you with the state’s requirements for teacher certification. Florida offers a variety of options for completing these requirements, some of which will allow you to complete your certification outside the state of Florida, while on active duty abroad, or in your current employment. While teacher certification is controlled at the state level, each local school district retains the responsibility for administering its own employment process.

Florida has 67 counties; each one is a school district. Some counties are small and rural with as few as 1,000 students; others are large and urban with as many as 350,000 students. Such diversity means you are sure to find a location that is right for you. Detailed information about Florida is available on the My Florida Web site. Information about Florida’s schools and school districts is located on the Florida Department of Education Web site, and you can find information concerning job fairs, district employment, teacher vacancies, and teacher preparation programs at TeachInFlorida.com.
