Broward County Students Compete in Solar Car Challenge
After working eight to 12 hours a day during the summer of 2010 on their student-built solar car, a group of dedicated students at South Plantation High School in Broward County placed second in the nation in the classic division of the 2010 Hunt-Winston Solar Car Challenge in July 2010. The race lasted eight days and covered an 850 mile route through 45 cities from Fort Worth, Texas to Boulder, Colo. Under the direction of teacher Allan Phipps, a 2011 Florida Department of Education/Macy’s Teacher of the Year finalist, the students developed and built the Solar Knight II to rigorous structural and engineering requirements. The car placed in the top spot four out of seven race days earning second place in the classic division and fourth overall.
