Florida Schools Shine In National Healthy Schools Program
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation will honor 114 schools from across the nation at its Healthy Schools Forum Aug. 4-6, 2009. Schools that meet national school health best practices are recognized with gold, silver or bronze level awards.
Twenty-five schools from Alachua, Escambia, Hillsborough, Lee, Miami-Dade and Pinellas counties have earned either a silver and bronze level award by promoting a healthier school environment for students and staff. These Florida schools represent more than 20 percent of all schools receiving awards.
The following schools earned a Silver level award:

- George Washington Carver Elementary School
- Silver Bluff Elementary School
- Miami Edison Middle School
- Hillsborough County
- Kenly Elementary School
The following schools earned a Bronze level award:
- Alachua County
- Gainesville High School
- Escambia County
- J.H. Workman Middle School
- Woodham Middle School
- Hillsborough County
- Kenly Elementary School
- Lee County
- North Fort Myers High School
- Miami-Dade
- American Senior High School
- Bent Tree Elementary School
- Blue Lakes Elementary School
- Calusa Elementary School
- Edison Park Elementary School
- Gertrude K. Edleman/Sabal Palm Elementary School
- Herbert A. Ammons Middle School
- Melrose Elementary School
- North Miami Elementary School
- Olympia Heights Elementary School
- Royal Green Elementary School
- Scott Lake Elementary School
- South Pointe Elementary School
- Toussaint L’ouverture Elementary School
- Mae M. Walters Elementary School
- Pinellas County
- Belcher Elementary School
- Safety Harbor Elementary School
Schools participating in the Healthy Schools Program are eligible to earn bronze, silver, gold or platinum awards based on their range of healthy eating and physical activity programs and policies. The rigorous program criteria were developed in consultation with a panel of experts, including representatives from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the American Heart Association, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and others.
The Healthy Schools Program offers technical assistance and resources to all schools and districts that are working to create campuses that promote healthy eating and physical activity for all staff and students.
