Community Service Grants Awarded to Florida Schools
Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation is awarding service grants of up to $10,000 each to 17 SkillsUSA chapters for innovative projects or enhancements within their communities. Of the 17 schools selected from across the country to receive these grants, three were selected in Florida. More than 200 applicants were in this category. Congratulations to the following schools:
A student organization, SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives, working together to ensure America has a skilled work force. SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.
North Marion High School, Citra, Fla.
Membership: 55 students and teachersProject: Students will renovate an old shop/P.E. weight room into a basic training auto shop. The facility will provide first year auto students with hands-on skills training with equipment ranging from grinders and vices to presses and air compressors. The second phase of the project is to create a Job Skill Excellence program for the students. The program will include training on completing employment applications, writing resumes and preparing for job interviews.
Pensacola Junior College, Pensacola, Fla.
Membership: 61 students and teachersProject: Students will create the “Green Education Module “project, a classroom-based demonstration/training model, containing green equipment and supplies, which will provide opportunities to current and future students in PJC construction-related programs. The college does not currently have the ability to demonstrate the most popular “Green Building Technologies” which are imperative for students to possess to be competitive in the market place.
Technical Education Center Osceola, Kissimmee, Fla.
Membership: 71 students and teachersProject: Students will renovate and update classroom space to create a dedicated lab to train and test students for industry certifications. The hope is to create a state of the art center for students to prepare for their futures. The renovations include cleaning, painting, run electricity and network infrastructure plus new office chairs for the work stations.
