Claywell 5th Grader Wins National Contest
Tyler Smith, a fifth grader at Claywell Elementary School in Tampa, recently won first place in the American Geological Institute's (AGI) visual arts contest.
Tyler created a poster depicting himself as a scientist studying Earth Science using the inquiry approach to answer a question in nature. Tyler drew himself testing the school soil for lead.
He received $300 and a copy of AGI's Faces of Earth DVD. The visual arts contest involved kindergarten through fifth grade students creating a two-dimensional illustration of the theme, “Studying Our Earth.” The AGI contests were part of Earth Science Week activities.
