Largo Middle School Teacher Named Outstanding School Science Teacher

Leslie Pohley, who has spent her entire 30-year science teaching career in the same classroom at Largo Middle in Pinellas County, has been named the state’s 2008 Outstanding Middle School Science Teacher by the Florida Association of Science Teachers.

The award was presented at the State Science Teachers Conference in Orlando. Pohley received a wall plaque, $100 from the Florida Association of Science Supervisors and $500 from the Florida Association of Science Teachers.

Pohley was honored for her significant contributions to science education, her dedication an inspiration to students and her fellow teachers in the quest for learning about and living science. The award also recognizes her for promoting science and science education over a significant period of time at the local, district, state and national levels.

In addition to this prestigious award, Pohley recently received a Splash! mini-grant through the Southwest Florida Water Management District. The $4,914 grant will allow her students to take field trips to local water bodies to perform water quality tests and visit the Florida Aquarium. With this grant money, her students also will create an on-campus Florida-friendly garden and classroom ecosystems as well as perform water-related classroom experiments.
