Brevard Public Schools Awarded Grant to Launch “Space Explorers” Program
Brevard Public Schools recently received special funding for some elementary students to explore the space outside their classrooms. Adult and Community Education and the School Age Child Care Programs will receive a state 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant totaling $1.8 million over five years.
The grant will provide enhanced after-school services at Coquina, Riverview and South Lake Elementary Schools in Titusville. Fifty students from each site will have the opportunity to participate in a “Space Explorers” program. This project includes Delaware North Parks and Recreation, NASA, Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex, Merritt Island National Refuge, and YMCA-Titusville as partners in education. Participating students will receive after-school services that include nine off-site experiential learning activities at the space complex/national refuge each year; weekly health and physical fitness activities that the YMCA will deliver at the sites; and daily enrichment and learning activities supported through certified academic teachers and support staff.
