Hillsborough Superintendent Honored by Florida Association of School Administrators

Hillsborough County schools superintendent MaryEllen Elia recently received the Lamp of Knowledge award from the Florida Association of School Administrators.

School Board Chair Jack Lamb accepted the award on behalf of the superintendent, who was out of town for a previously scheduled event.

Elia was recognized for securing the largest teacher raise in 20 years, working closely with U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings on the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind, and leading the state in implementing performance pay plans for teachers. Also contributing to her selection was the fact that under her leadership the district was chosen by the College Board and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to participate in the EXCELerator project to provide a national model for addressing the “advantage gap.”

The Lamp of Knowledge award is given annually to an education administrator for outstanding contributions to the field of education. The award was one of six presented at the annual summer joint conference of educators and school boards, held in Lake Buena Vista.
