FLVS Student Teams Receive Top Awards At 2007 State Science Olympiad
Students attending the Florida Virtual School recently won top awards at the 2007 State Science Olympiad held at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Sixteen FLVS middle and high school students, who are also members of the FLVS Science Club, competed against more than 800 students from around the state in inter-scholastic competitions on topics related to biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, problem solving and technology.
FLVS Science Club received three awards in the high school competition and three in the middle school competition. FLVS teams in the high school competition earned two first place awards for Chemistry Lab (Henry Ma, 11th grade, Miami and Mervin Zhao, 11th grade, Palmetto Bay), a first place award for Disease Detectives (Reguli Granger, 11th grade, St. Petersburg) and two second place awards for Ecology (Henry Wa, 11th grade, Miami and Mervin Zhao, 11th grade, Palmetto Bay).
In the middle school competition, FLVS teams received top honors in three categories, including second place for Ecology (Sean Buchanan, 8th grade, Jacksonville) and for Balloon Launch Glider (Scotty Kane, 7th grade, Port Saint Lucie) and a third place award for Rocks and Minerals (Sean Buchanan, 8th grade, Jacksonville).
