Marion County Offers Computers For Kids
Despite the widespread availability of computers in classrooms, many families face the challenge of providing the same technical environment for their children at home. To address this need, Marion County created the “Computers-4-Kids” program which supplies free computers to elementary-age students. The program rescues computers once headed for the dumpster and recycles them into learning tools for home use.
The District Technology Office takes unusable computers from the classrooms and purges their hard drives to reinstall basic donated operating systems and academic software. With the help of local high school students, the program not only offers usable resources, but offers students hands-on repair experience. Though Internet service is the responsibility of the families receiving the computers, the District aims to secure Internet providers at little or no charge in the near future.
