Pierce Middle Preparing for the FCAT

The Chatman family enjoys their spaghetti dinner while gaining information on preparing
for the FCAT.

Grab a plate of spaghetti with meatballs, salad topped with Italian dressing, and a slice of garlic bread, and let's talk! That was the idea six years ago when Principal Victor Fernandez of Pierce Middle School in Hillsborough County wanted to help parents understand what the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) was all about. "The first year, about 35 people showed up and I cooked for them," said Fernandez, "But I don't give up on anything."

Principal Victor Fernandez speaking to parents
on the importance of staying involved
in their child's education.

This year, over 1,000 people including parents, students, community leaders, and faculty participated in the school's 6th Annual FCAT Spaghetti Dinner. Complete with live bands, student performances, and great food the event gives parents an opportunity to learn about the FCAT and tips on how to help prepare their children to take the test. Parents also get the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the campus, meet teachers and other parents, and learn of resources available to them.

"After the FCAT exams I plan to take all of our students on a field trip to celebrate our success," said Fernandez.
