Mission - Bureau of Family and Community Outreach

The mission of the Bureau of Family and Community Outreach is to empower families and communities with resources and information needed to promote a high quality education for their children. The Bureau reaches out to serve Florida's diverse families and communities in a number of ways, including the Just for Parents online community.

Dropout Prevention

The Office of Dropout Prevention provides technical assistance, strategies and resources to assist students, schools, parents and community organizations throughout the state of Florida. Our efforts ensure students have access to innovative programs which improve the quality of education options available to enhance students’ opportunities for access, advancement, and achievement.

Safe Schools

The Office of Safe Schools serves to promote and support safe learning environments by addressing issues of student safety and academic success on state, district, and school levels. Schools that implement school safety measures, drug prevention programs, and positive school climate that promote caring relationships either directly or indirectly facilitate rising student academic achievement.

21st Century Community Learning Centers Program

This program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.

Volunteer & Community Involvement

Volunteer and Community Involvement programs develop community resources in response to the differing needs of classrooms. By accessing the many diverse resources found in communities, these programs enrich and enhance school curriculum. A wide array of community partners enables these programs to maximize their impact. Volunteers may tutor, mentor, assist in the classroom, help with fundraising, participate in developing school plans, as well as many other opportunities. Recognition awards promote community involvement as well as highlight outstanding volunteer practices and showcase exemplary projects which are then shared statewide.

Family Engagement

The Bureau of Family and Community Outreach (BFCO) provides resources, recognition and technical assistance to families in an effort to increase family engagement that promotes their children's success in education. BFCO has the role of fostering wider and more substantive family and community involvement by identifying and sharing information with schools and districts about the many different ways to get involved in your child's education.
