Zero Tolerance
Nationally, Zero Tolerance policies and their resulting disciplines have received plenty of negative publicity, such as very young students expelled for possessing toy guns and scouting utensils at school. In 2009, Florida revised its Zero Tolerance law to reflect a more common sense approach to misconduct on school campuses. The focus of this law is on "conduct that poses a serious threat to school safety". It encourages the use of alternatives to expulsion or referral to law enforcement, and is not intended to include petty acts of misconduct and misdemeanors as zero tolerance offenses.
