Florida College System Foundation Awards Scholarship Funds to Hillsborough Community College

Tampa, Fla., September 23, 2016 – Today at the State Board of Education meeting in Tampa, Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart presented Dr. Ken Atwater, president of Hillsborough Community College, with a check for more than $41,000 to benefit first-generation students and students pursuing careers in the expanding field of health care.

"Florida’s continued focus to help students achieve their very best does not stop in high school. We work to instill a drive to look beyond their senior year and pursue career and higher education goals,” said Commissioner Stewart. “I am proud that these companies are investing in Florida’s future by continuing to contribute generously to the Florida College System Foundation.”

Each year, scholarships funded by the Helios Education Foundation, Florida Blue and Bank of America focus on relieving the national nursing shortage and helping students who are the first in their family to attend college. The scholarships will help add nurses and allied health professionals that reflect Florida’s diverse population while meeting critical workforce needs.

"Our colleges lead the nation in providing a high-quality, affordable education that prepares students to succeed in a global economy. I am proud to celebrate the successes of the first generation and allied health students that will be rewarded for their hard work through the support of our partners,” said Chancellor Madeline Pumariega. “I appreciate the Florida College System Foundation and the partners for helping Floridians reach their dreams and prepare for the workforce.”

"Hillsborough Community College is tremendously grateful for this gift (from The Helios Education Foundation, Bank of America and Florida Blue) that will support scholarships for many of our deserving students and allow them to complete their studies and become productive, contributing members of Tampa Bay's workforce,” said Dr. Ken Atwater, President of Hillsborough Community College.

This year, the Florida College System Foundation will award more than $893,000 in scholarship funds to Florida’s 28 colleges through the state. Students may apply for scholarships through their local college foundation and/or financial aid office. Eligibility criteria are based on local college requirements.
