Latest Teacher Talk Show Focuses on Summer Reading~ Show also introduces newest Teacher Treasures contest winner ~
Tallahassee – The Florida Department of Education (DOE) announced today that the newest Teacher Talk show is now available for download through the Florida Knowledge Network and on the Just for Teachers website at www.fldoe.org/justforteachers. This segment focuses on summer reading and literacy, and provides various ways for families to get involved in the educational process. Last year, the Department spearheaded the Commissioner’s Summer Reading Adventure that focused on utilizing a tool called Find a Book that helps students locate books based on their reading interests and text complexity. This summer, the Department will continue its reading initiative to encourage more students to focus on their reading efforts all year long.
“Summer is fast approaching and our teachers and students are looking forward to a hard earned break,” said DOE Teacher Liaison Kelly Seay. “However, just because school will be out doesn't mean that reading and learning should stop. Studies have shown that students who do not read over the summer are likely to lose crucial ground, and this is why our April show is so important.”
Viewers of the show can also hear about the upcoming Teacher Treasures registration window, where they can enter to win one of three weekend getaways. The Teacher Treasures winner for March was Patricia Thrailkill, an Orange County teacher who received a weekend stay at the Inn on Fifth and four tickets to Wet n’ Wild. Developed last year by DOE, Teacher Treasures is a monthly contest designed to help honor Florida’s dedicated teachers. Teachers must re-enter every month to be eligible to win. The entry form is only available online, with the application period for each drawing beginning the first of the month. Winners are given the opportunity to be featured in the Department’s Just for Teachers newsletter, which is e-mailed monthly to educators across the state.
The Just for Teachers website provides a varied listing of discounts or reduced rates on any number of items and services. Educators should be on the lookout for the Just for Teachers newsletter that includes important education news as well as an updated list of available discounts and offers.
