Statement By: Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith Regarding Florida’s finalist presentation for Phase 2 of the Race to the Top Competition
“Today, I was honored to join Governor Charlie Crist, Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, Florida Education Association president Andy Ford and Public Schools Chancellor Dr. Frances Haithcock in presenting Florida’s application for Phase 2 of the federal Race to the Top competition. The presentation went very well as we highlighted our significant reform efforts over the last decade and the tremendous progress those reforms have helped us to achieve.“We also addressed detailed questions from our federal reviewers, giving our well-rounded team of presenters a chance to showcase Florida’s renewed spirit of collaboration and our commitment to the bold, innovative strategies that will make our education system one of the best in the nation. As you will see in my attached remarks, my passion for this competition remains stronger than ever and I am grateful for the overwhelming support we have received from stakeholders throughout the state. Florida stands in a unique position to turn these funds into a revolution of success and I’m confident that our efforts today brought us one step closer to making that happen.”
