Department of Education and Florida PTA Announce Parental Involvement Awards~ Creative programs recognized at state conference ~
TALLAHASSEE – Exemplary parent programs from throughout the state were recognized by the Florida Department of Education (DOE) and the Florida Parent Teacher Association (PTA) last Saturday during the PTA’s annual Leadership Conference in Tarpon Springs. Karin Brown, Florida PTA president, and Joe Davis, Chief for DOE’s Bureau of Family and Community Outreach, were on hand to present the awards and highlight these programs for their ability to make a difference in the local community through support and active involvement in the school system.
“Progress in our schools is dependent on the participation of parents and families who are committed to making education a priority,” said Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith. “This year’s winning programs highlight the vast amounts of ingenuity and enthusiasm contained within our communities and I am hopeful they will serve as an inspiration for other groups who wish to follow in their successes.”
The Parental Involvement Awards annually recognize exemplary family and parent involvement programs from across the state that focus on welcoming all families into the local school system, providing effective communication, supporting student success, speaking up for every child, and promoting collaboration among all stakeholders.
“The awards highlight some incredible programs dedicated to involving parents and families in preparing children for a lifetime of academic success,” said Karin Brown, Florida PTA president. “The conference is a wonderful opportunity for parents to network and share their ideas on connecting schools and families.”
For more than a decade, the DOE and PTA have partnered to recognize commendable parent programs in Florida schools. For more information about the Parent Involvement Awards, visit http://www.fldoe.org/family/parent.asp.
