DOE Press Office
Statement By: Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith Regarding Release of Draft K-12 Common Core State Standards for English-Language Arts and Math“I’m very pleased with the tremendous amount of work that has gone into developing these standards and am appreciative of all the individuals involved in producing a draft that truly seeks to make our children highly competitive in these critical subject areas. As this draft is reviewed and fine-tuned over the coming weeks, I am confident the resulting product will be one that our state is proud to adopt.
“Equally critical to the Common Core effort is how participating states will choose to assess these standards. It’s vitally important that our conversations continue to focus on stronger accountability in our schools that is affordable, allows for a quick turnaround of results, and is internationally benchmarked for every student. This approach, combined with rigorous Common Core standards and high quality teachers and leaders will ensure that our students are prepared to compete in today’s global economy.”
