Florida Celebrates National School Counseling Week

~ Weeklong celebration highlights important role school counselors play in students’ lives ~

Tallahassee – Schools throughout Florida began their celebration of National School Counseling Week today in honor of the extraordinary work school counselors do on behalf of students and their families. Celebrated Feb. 1-5 of this year, National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve success in school and plan for college or a career. As school counselors, these individuals are able to help parents focus on ways to further the educational, personal and social growth of their children, while also working with teachers and other educators to help students explore their potential.

“Always available and tireless in their efforts to assist, school counselors provide critical support in the development of our children and their safe and successful transition from school to the workplace,” said Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith. “This week serves as a great reminder for all of us in education to show our appreciation of the tremendous work these caring professionals do each and every day.”

National School Counseling Week, as proclaimed by Governor Charlie Crist, focuses on the unique contributions of professional school counselors within school systems in the United States and is sponsored by the American School Counselor Association. Throughout the week, schools are encouraged to show appreciation for the work school counselors perform, including personal and social development, offering counseling to help develop well-rounded students through academic, personal, social and career development, and providing valuable financial aid and college preparation counsel, among others.

The Florida School Counselor Association provides the following tips to help you celebrate National School Counseling Week:

  • Declare it National School Counseling Week in your school by running an announcement over the PA and by distributing a schedule of events to all teachers, students and staff.
  • Hold a special assembly or dinner to honor your school counselors. Encourage students, parents, teachers and staff to attend to show appreciation and support.
  • Present awards to your school counselors at the assembly or dinner, highlighting their personal contributions to the success of their students.
  • Encourage all students and teachers to openly express their appreciation to their school counselors this week. Ask the students to write thank you notes to their counselors or to pay them a visit to thank them for all of their help.
