Floridaís Teacher of the Year in the Running for National Honor

~ Megan Allen chosen as finalist for national Teacher of the Year honor ~

TALLAHASSEE Ė Megan Allen, Hillsborough County educator and Florida Department of Education/Macyís 2010 Teacher of the Year, today was announced as one of four finalists for the National Teacher of the Year program. The fourth grade teacher from Cleveland Elementary School was chosen from an esteemed group of state representatives for her ability to effectively communicate to other teachers about the importance of educating future leaders.

ďItís been a joy to see first hand how Meganís infectious enthusiasm and ingenuity can inspire both teachers and students alike, and Iím so proud that she can carry her message to the national stage,Ē said Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith. ďHer passion to challenge and mentor students is truly uplifting and, if chosen, she will serve as an incredible ambassador for her colleagues throughout the country.Ē

"Iím so humbled and honored to be chosen as a finalist! Itís meant so much to me to represent all of Floridaís amazing teachers, hard-working students, and those involved in education,Ē said Megan Allen. ďIíve already been so inspired by the classrooms and ideas Iíve seen so far and canít wait to use this opportunity to keep learning and growing."

As a finalist, Megan will interview in March with a selection committee representing the major national education organizations. If chosen as the National Teacher of the Year, she will serve as the spokesperson for the entire countryís teaching profession, addressing government officials, business communities, parents, teachers, and students at conventions, forums and meetings across the country.

The National Teacher of the Year will be announced in April by the President and honored in a series of events in Washington, DC.
