Statement By:
Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith
Regarding Florida School District Participation in Federal Race to the Top Grant

“As of today, 63 of Florida’s 67 school districts, in addition to four developmental research schools and the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, have agreed to join the Department in the first stage of applying for federal Race to the Top funding. This overwhelming show of support from our school districts for continued collaboration and dialogue exemplifies Florida’s willingness to strive for unprecedented reforms, benefiting our teachers, students, parents and communities.

“I want to praise Florida’s school districts for taking advantage of this exceptional opportunity for educational improvement in our state. Their feedback has been invaluable throughout this process and will allow Florida to create an application that stands out among the competition. I look forward to continued coordination with all of Florida’s education stakeholders as we work together in the best interests of our students.”
