Statement By:
Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith
Regarding 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Math Results for Miami Dade
“Miami Dade, as part of its participation in the NAEP Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA) project, received some encouraging news today regarding its 2009 NAEP math performance. According to results, the district’s fourth and eighth-graders are performing above average when compared to other large cities across the country and in some instances, are even matching the performance of the nation.
“Although this is only their first year participating in this project, these results show that district teachers and administrators are focused on the needs of their students and are committed to improving academic achievement in their schools. I’m confident that under the leadership of Superintendent Carvalho and his staff we will continue to see the performance of Miami Dade’s students rise.”
