Statement By: Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith
~ Regarding the 2009 Advanced Placement Summer Institute ~

“During this morning’s kickoff of the 2009 Advanced Placement Summer Institute in Tampa, I had the distinct pleasure and honor of speaking to more than 650 inspired educators about the importance of AP courses and the positive effect they can have on a child’s education. I have always been a firm believer that education is about opportunity and that all children have the capacity to excel beyond the expectations that others prescribe upon them. AP coursework represents a prime extension of that belief as it gives students an opportunity to participate in an environment that stimulates their thinking and encourages them to achieve at higher levels. Florida’s efforts to expand AP offerings are already having a profound effect, with striking increases in the number of minority students and students in rural areas participating in, and benefiting from these courses. These increases mean that more students are leaving our public school system better prepared for college or a career with the skills they need to tackle a 21st Century job market rife with competition. I am proud of our teachers for their efforts in this vital area and am optimistic about all the future opportunities that lay ahead for our children.”
