Statement By: Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith
Recognizing Parents’ Day, Celebrated July 26, 2009

In honor of Parents’ Day, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the countless numbers of parents who selflessly give of themselves each and every day to ensure the safety, development and success of their children. Parents wear an amazing number of hats in service of their children but perhaps one of the most important roles they play is that of teacher. From day one, they are constantly teaching and preparing our youth for what this world has to offer and our education system as we know it would be lost without their support and involvement. As a proud parent and grandparent myself, I know personally just how important their efforts are in shaping not only the lives of their children but the future they are inheriting. With the deepest sincerity, thank you for all you do.
