Statement By: Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith
Regarding Florida’s Academic Progress as Indicated by the National Center for Educational Statistics’ Report on Achievement Gaps
“According to the National Center for Educational Statistics report that was released today, Florida is one of only three states in the nation to close the long-term achievement gap between Black and White fourth-graders in reading and one of only 15 to close it in math. This represents tremendous progress for our state and is a direct tribute to the hard work of our dedicated teachers who continue to go above and beyond to ensure our students are receiving a quality education.
The report also noted academic progress for both Black and White eighth-graders in math, but highlighted that we still have much more work to do close the achievement gap between these groups of students. It’s vital we continue this momentous work to ensure every student has the opportunity for a successful future.”
