Phi Theta Kappa 2008 All-Florida Academic Team Honored During Awards Ceremony
~ More than 100 community college students recognized for outstanding academic success ~

TALLAHASSEE - Members of the 2008 Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Florida Academic Team were honored today by Florida Community Colleges Chancellor Will Holcombe and several college presidents during an awards ceremony held at Florida State University in Tallahassee. This year’s team consists of 104 students representing Florida's 28 community colleges, one independent college, and one independent university. Students named to the All-Florida Academic Team are chosen based on their exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and service to the community.

“I commend these students on the extraordinary commitment they have shown to the pursuit of academic excellence,” said Chancellor Holcombe. “They represent the pinnacle of success in our community colleges and are a testament to the high quality of education these institutions offer.”

The All-Florida Academic Team is composed of students who were nominated by their respective colleges to the All-USA Academic Team competition sponsored by USA Today and PTK, the International Honor Society for two-year colleges. As part of the awards ceremony, team members were presented with PTK medallions and certificates. They also received special recognition by the Florida Legislature and other state leaders during a visit to the Capitol.

In nominating students for the All-Florida Academic Team, colleges considered:

  • Participation in honors programs;
  • Membership in and awards received from academic or technical honors organizations;
  • Awards and honors received for academic, technical, and leadership accomplishments;
  • Academic enrichment achieved through academic study, internships, and cultural experiences; and
  • Sharing of academic attainments, knowledge, and skills through community service.
