Commissioner of Education Application Deadline Extended

TALLAHASSEE — The deadline to apply for the Florida Education Commissioner position has been extended ten days from Friday, July 13, 2007, to 5 p.m. EDT on Monday, July 23, 2007. The decision follows a strong recommendation from PROACT Search, Inc., the national executive search firm hired by the State Board of Education, to extend the deadline in order to give additional individuals who have expressed interest in the position an opportunity to submit applications. PROACT Search, Inc. continues its recruiting efforts and anticipates receipt of additional applications from individuals who may not have been aware of the position until recently.

“By extending the deadline, we expect to expand the pool of applicants, offering the State Board of Education a robust list of candidates to consider,” said Education Commissioner Jeanine Blomberg.

The application extension will not impact the State Board of Education’s timeline for selecting the next Commissioner.

The State Board of Education hired PROACT Search, Inc. at April’s meeting to facilitate identification, screening, interviewing and selection of a candidate matched to Florida’s needs and interests. Throughout the search, interested parties can log onto PROACT’s Web site and view information, such as position requirements, applicant data, applicant search criteria and relevant deadlines. This information is available at .

The Commissioner of Education serves as the chief educational officer for the state and is responsible for providing full assistance to the State Board of Education in enforcing compliance with the mission and goals of Florida’s seamless preK-20 education system.

The State Board of Education is scheduled to select the next Florida Commissioner of Education in the fall of this year.
