2007 All-Florida Academic Team Announced

TALLAHASSEE – Education Commissioner Jeanine Blomberg and Community Colleges Executive Vice Chancellor Judith Bilsky today announced the members of the 2007 All-Florida Academic Team in Tallahassee. The 110 students who comprise the All-Florida Academic Team represent 28 of Florida's public community colleges, one independent two-year college, and one independent university.

"My congratulations to everyone honored today. We are proud that these exceptional students have chosen to begin their college experience within the Florida Community College System.  Each plays an important role in creating a brighter tomorrow for our state," said Commissioner Blomberg.

Students on the All-Florida Academic Team are nominated by their respective colleges to the All-USA Academic Team competition sponsored by USA Today and the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.  College presidents or their designees are invited to submit nominations based on outstanding grade point averages; participation in honors programs; awards, honors, and recognition for academic achievement; and service to the college and the community.

"The All-Florida Academic Team program confirms what we already know about our students who are attending one of the 28 community colleges across our state- they are brilliant, talented, goal-oriented students," said Executive Vice Chancellor Bilsky.

In addition to the announcement of the 2007 All-Florida Academic Team, the 2007 New Century Scholar – awarded to Florida’s top two-year college student – was named. This year’s recipient is Barry Bohnsack from Valencia Community College. Bohnsack is majoring in mathematics and works part-time at NASA.  He plans to transfer to the University of Central Florida and, one day, train America’s future astronauts.

The Florida Division of Community Colleges, AIG VALIC, Phi Theta Kappa Florida Region, and The Foundation for Florida’s Community Colleges sponsored this year's recognition event.
