age
TALLAHASSEE Governor Jeb Bush today encouraged Florida families to share the gift of reading during the holidays by visiting the 2006 Just Read, Families! for the Holidays reading list. Research shows that students who read while on vacation risk sustain progress made throughout the school year.
"Holiday and winter breaks are a great time for families to read together," said Governor Bush. "By encouraging students to read, we bolster the opportunities for them to succeed in their education and throughout life."
The Just Read, Families! for the Holidays reading list can be found at: www.justreadfamilies.org/holidays/reading.asp. The site features age-specific book suggestions. Resources include links to county and municipal public libraries, tips for parents on how to read with children and a list of recommended books with holiday themes including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Ramadan.
"Florida leads the nation in rising student achievement, showing our focus on reading is working," said Education Commissioner John L. Winn. "Reading a book over the holidays is fun and Just Read Families! provides a well-rounded list for all students to enjoy."
Just Read, Florida! makes reading a priority in Florida's public schools and among the community groups and volunteer organizations that support them. It is based on the latest reading research, which includes emphasis on phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
