Department of Education to Host K-12 Conference
Reform It's Happening: Showcase of Excellence
ORLANDO The Department of Education and the Florida Education Foundation will co-host the 2006 K-12 Conference and Innovation Fair beginning Tuesday in Orlando. The conference will focus on innovative approaches to improving student achievement at the middle and high school levels. Of particular interest will be the Innovation Fair where schools and districts will showcase career, collegiate and magnet academies. The conference is the first step in highlighting the state's best model academies and programs to assist other schools looking to develop programs of their own.
The conference will kick-off Tuesday evening with Education Commissioner John L. Winn and K-12 Public Schools Chancellor Cheri Pierson Yecke, Ph.D. opening the event. On Wednesday, Mike Fienberg, Co-Founder of KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program), will give the keynote address. Thursday, Governor Jeb Bush will be the keynote speaker and will address the state of education over the course of his two terms in office. Kati Haycock, Director of the Education Trust will give remarks on closing the achievement gap Thursday. Concurrent sessions will run throughout the conference.
