Florida Department of Education Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week
TALLAHASSEE Education Commissioner John L. Winn today announced that Teacher Appreciation Week will be held statewide May 7-13, 2006. Florida State Board of Education Member Donna Callaway, Commissioner Winn and K-12 Chancellor Cheri Pierson Yecke will participate in celebrations around the state to show appreciation for Florida's more than 180,000 teachers.
"Few other professionals touch as many people as teachers do and this is the ideal time to recognize the contributions Florida educators have made to our state," said Commissioner Winn. "Earlier this week, we announced record levels of third graders reading and demonstrating math skills at or above grade level. This is a testament to the tremendous efforts of our teachers. I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank a special teacher."
In addition, the Florida Education Foundation has partnered with businesses throughout the state to offer special deals and discounts to Florida's teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, as well as throughout the year. Some of the offers include promotions from Macy's, Wet and Wild, Rack Room Shoes, Medieval Times, Wannado City, Bealls and Borders Books.
At each celebration venue, events will include pep rallies, student performances and speeches by representatives of the Department of Education, as well as local education officials.
