State Board of Education to Meet in Tallahassee

The State Board of Education will be held in Tallahassee on Tuesday, April 18.

Topics discussed at the meeting will include:

  • Intervention Policy for Repeating F Schools
  • Corrective Action for Districts and Restructuring for Schools under NCLB
  • Planning for the Technology Tools for Teachers Initiative
  • Distance Learning Programs
  • Workforce and SUCEED Florida Program
  • Reading Adoption for Instructional Materials
  • Teacher Recruitment and Retention
  • VPK Update — 2006 Kindergarten Screening

The School-Related Employee of the Year will be announced by Chairman Phil Handy and Education Commissioner John L. Winn. The five nominees are:

  • LaDtetre' McClain, a Media Aide at Alachua Elementary School, Alachua County;
  • Sheila Byrd, an Exceptional Student Education Teacher Assistant at Mildred Helms Elementary in Pinellas County;
  • Janet Gierhart, a Family Resource Center Paraprofessional at Orange City Elementary in Volusia County;
  • Joey L. Williams, an Exceptional Student Education Assistant for Autistic Students at Lakeside Junior High School in Clay County; and
  • Kathy McCain, a Prekindergarden Lead Teacher at Cedar Key School in Levy County.
