Department of Education Announces Regional Finalists for Principal Leadership Award

TALLAHASSEE — Education Commissioner John L. Winn today announced the 14 regional finalists for the Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership, presented by the Florida Department of Education (DOE). The award recognizes principals who have enhanced student achievement and fostered partnerships through community outreach and family involvement.

"We are thrilled to honor these outstanding school administrators and recognize them for their exemplary contributions to Florida's students, schools and communities," said Commissioner Winn. "Through their innovative leadership and dedication to academic excellence, Florida's schools have increased student performance and established safe learning environments for our children."

For the first time, state winners will be announced at the Commissioner's Summit for Principals, hosted by the DOE and the Florida Association of School Administrators. This second annual event, to be held in Ponte Vedra, Florida, September 29 and 30, will also provide opportunities for networking, idea sharing and gaining insights into best practices from national education leaders.

The Principal Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership was established in 1988 to honor three exceptional principals from elementary, middle and high school. This year, 20 districts participated in the program. The nominees were judged on their accomplishments in increasing student performance levels, establishing community partnerships and parental involvement, providing assistance for at-risk and special needs students and developing innovative strategies that have had a positive impact on the school and learning environment. The selection committee included principals, assistant principals and teachers from around the state. One nominee per school level category may be selected for each region for a total of 15 finalists statewide (this year there were no nominees for Region II middle school level, for a total of 14 finalists).

The Commissioner's Summit for Principals is sponsored by the Florida Education Foundation, a not-for-profit charitable corporation established to support K-12 public schools. The Foundation has identified leadership development as one of its top priorities and supports educational reform initiatives that lead to higher student achievement.
