PRESS RELEASE
April 1, 2005
Vivian Myrtetus
(850) 245-0413
MEMORANDUM
TO: Members of the Media
FROM: Vivian Myrtetus, Director of Communications
Earlier today, Education Commissioner John Winn sent a letter to Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings requesting amendments to Florida’s requirements to comply with the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).
Florida is committed to maintaining the high standards we set before NCLB and is not asking the U.S. Department of Education to lower standards, but instead asking them to look at alternatives in their calculations.
The attached letter shows that Florida has made steady progress in complying with NCLB and that we continue to lead the nation in student progress and academic achievement.
Commissioner Winn will be available via conference call from 1:00-1:30 p.m. today to discuss Florida’s requested amendments.
The dial in number is (850) 922-2903.
