Hurricane Statewide Education Update
As of 6:00 p.m. EDT, September 28, 2004
TALLAHASSEE In the aftermath of four hurricanes, classes will have resumed in nearly 84% of Florida's school districts by Wednesday, September 29. Due to Hurricane Jeanne, classes are cancelled in 9 school districts, campuses at six community colleges, and one campus at a state university. Two additional school districts, one community college, and one university are still closed and recovering from Hurricane Ivan.
Parents and students should monitor local news for the very latest information. Below is a detailed list of closings for Wednesday, September 29 and re-opening dates announced so far:
K12 Public Schools
- Schools in the following 10 counties and the Florida School for the
Deaf and Blind are CLOSED on Wednesday, September 29:
- Brevard, Highlands, Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, and
Polk (recovering from Hurricane Jeanne)
- Escambia and Santa Rosa (recovering from Hurricane Ivan)
- St. Lucie (still recovering from Hurricane Frances and now Jeanne)
- Brevard, Highlands, Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach, and
Polk (recovering from Hurricane Jeanne)
- Brevard and Highlands County schools hope to re-open Thursday,
September 30
- Okeechobee and Polk County schools hope to re-open on Monday, October 4
- Escambia and Santa Rosa counties will re-open on Monday, October 11
- Schools in 3 counties (Indian River, Martin, and St. Lucie) are closed until further notice
- Schools in Palm Beach have not yet announced plans for re-opening
Community Colleges
- CLOSED Wednesday, September 29 due to Hurricane Jeanne:
- Brevard Community College Palm Bay Campus (all other campuses will open)
- Florida Community College at Jacksonville Kent Campus (all other campuses are open)
- Indian River Community College
- Palm Beach Community College Palm Beach Gardens Campus (all other campuses will open)
- Polk Community College
- South Florida Community College
- Still recovering from Hurricane Ivan and CLOSED, Wednesday, September
29:
- Pensacola Junior College (classes scheduled to resume Monday, October 4)
- Except for the Mueller Campus at IRCC, all colleges closed as a result of Hurricane Jeanne hope to re-open on Thursday, September 30, pending power restoration
State Universities
- CLOSED Wednesday, September 29 due to Hurricane Jeanne:
- FAU St. Lucie campus (all other campuses are open)
- Still recovering from Hurricane Ivan and CLOSED, Wednesday, September
29:
- UWF Dorms will re-open Monday, October 4, with classes resuming Tuesday, October 5

State officials will continue to work closely with school districts, community colleges, and universities to assess needs and aid in recovery from Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne.
