Hurricane Statewide Education Update
As of 11:00 a.m. EDT, September 27, 2004

TALLAHASSEE – Due to Hurricane Jeanne, classes were cancelled today in nearly two thirds of Florida’s school districts, 16 community colleges, and campuses at four state universities. Two school districts, one community college, and one university are still recovering from Hurricane Ivan.

Decisions on school, community college, and university closings for Tuesday, Sept. 28 will not be made until later this afternoon. An update will be issued this evening from the State Emergency Operations Center, however, parents and students should monitor local news for the very latest information.

Below is a detailed list of closings for Monday, September 27:

K12 Public Schools

  • Schools in the following 45 counties, the lab school at UF, and the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind are CLOSED on Monday, Sept. 27:
    • Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Brevard, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Desoto, Dixie, Duval, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Hillsborough, Indian River, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lake, Leon, Levy, Madison, Manatee, Marion, Martin, Nassau, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Putnam, Seminole, Sumter, Suwannee, Taylor, Union, Volusia, and Wakulla (in preparation for or recovering from Hurricane Jeanne)
    • Escambia and Santa Rosa (recovering from Hurricane Ivan)
    • St. Lucie (still recovering from Hurricane Frances and now Jeanne)
  • Re-opening dates for Escambia and Santa Rosa counties will be announced this afternoon.

Community Colleges

  • 16 Colleges are CLOSED Monday, Sept. 27 due to Hurricane Jeanne:
    • Brevard Community College
    • Central Florida Community College
    • Daytona Beach Community College
    • Florida Community College at Jacksonville
    • Indian River Community College
    • Lake City Community College
    • Lake Sumter Community College
    • North Florida Community College
    • Palm Beach Community College
    • Polk Community College
    • Santa Fe Community College
    • Seminole Community College
    • St. Johns River Community College
    • St. Petersburg College
    • South Florida Community College
    • Valencia Community College Still recovering from Hurricane Ivan and CLOSED, Monday, Sept. 27:
    • Pensacola Junior College (classes scheduled to resume Monday, Oct. 4)

State Universities

  • CLOSED Monday due to Hurricane Jeanne:
    • FAU Jupiter & St. Lucie campuses (Boca and Broward campuses are OPEN)
    • UCF
    • UF
    • USF Lakeland campus (All other campuses are OPEN)
  • CLOSED Monday, Sept. 27 (recovering from Hurricane Ivan):
    • UWF – Dorms will re-open Monday, Oct. 4, with classes resuming Tuesday, Oct. 5

State officials will continue to work closely with school districts, community colleges, and universities to assess needs and aid in recovery from Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne.
