Education Secretary Jim Horne Names Ruben Lopez as Chief Technology Officer

TALLAHASSEE — Education Secretary Jim Horne announced today that he has appointed Ruben Lopez, an executive with the Tampa company Intermedia Communications Inc., as Chief Technology Officer for the Florida Board of Education.

"The information and technology needs of education, from kindergarten through graduate school, are critical to achieving our goals in a seamless system," Horne said. "Ruben Lopez has the broad qualifications, experience and skills needed to coordinate and advance the technology operations of our schools, community colleges and universities. He will shape a technology strategy that looks to the future of education in Florida."

As chief information officer and vice president for Intermedia Communications, a Tampa company that provides integrated communications, Lopez is responsible for all information-technology initiatives of a global staff of more than 330 people. The company recently merged with MCI/WorldCom.

His more than 30 years' experience includes work with CBS SportsLine.com and the University of Miami, where he was assistant vice president for information technology.

Lopez holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer sciences from St. Thomas University and an MBA from the University of Miami. He is pursuing a master's degree in computer information systems from the University of Miami and has been published extensively in the field of information technology.

Lopez will join Secretary Horne's leadership team on May 20.
