Education Secretary to hold roundtable discussion on reading and teacher preparation
Education Secretary Jim Horne has invited education leaders to join him in a discussion of reading and teacher preparation on Friday, Feb. 22, at the Seminole Campus of St. Petersburg College.
Governor Jeb Bush and Commissioner of Education Charlie Crist will join the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. roundtable discussion.
The discussion will examine how Florida can achieve the goal, set by Governor Bush in September, of having all students reading at or above their grade levels. In particular, the participants will discuss recent research into effective reading instruction and strategies. "It is imperative that scientific research becomes the foundation for teacher preparation programs and professional development in reading," Horne said in calling the roundtable discussion.
Secretary Horne and the participants will also discuss the Reading First portion of President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which Horne said offers Florida a unique opportunity to continue efforts to improve student achievement in reading.
The roundtable will be aired live on the Internet. For information, visit the Florida Board of Education's Web site, www.flboe.org.
