Teacher Talk: An Inside Look at Florida Education & Other Broadcasts

This monthly show focuses on Florida teachers and their innovations both in and out of the classroom. In addition, the show also features discussions on hot topics in education, information on legislative changes impacting the K-12 education system and will highlight educational resources available to teachers, parents, and students. The show is currently broadcast by the Florida Education Channel and the Florida Knowledge Network. It is also available to view online.

      This special 1 hour episode of “Teacher Talk: An Inside Look at Florida Education” highlights the Florida Department of Education-Macy’s Teacher of the Year Program, a recognition program honoring outstanding Florida teachers from school districts statewide. The program focuses on the history of the program and the Florida Department of Education’s partnership with Macy’s, the major sponsor of the program. This special show also highlights additional ways in which Florida recognizes outstanding teachers and contains the following:

      • Interview with current 2007 Florida Teacher of the Year, Conney Dahn
      • A look back at the 2007 finalists and celebration

      The 2008 Florida Department of Education-Macy’s Teacher of the Year will be announced on July 12 in a celebration at the Hard Rock Live at Universal Orlando Resort.

      Show 4 places the spotlight on innovative K -12 programs with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and math at all grade levels. In depth discussions feature Florida State University’s Family Science Night, directed by FSU Education Professor Dr. Cindee Lundeen. The program focuses on bringing science education to elementary school children through hands-on learning experiences created by future teachers in the Florida State University education program and assists schools in reaching out to families in order to encourage parental and family involvement. Host Nicole Flesvig also speaks with Coveta Grant, magnet program coordinator at Sealey Elementary School in Tallahassee, a math and science magnet school which has partnered with Florida State University to bring Family Science Night to students and families in Leon County. In addition, “Teacher Talk” visits the Challenger Learning Center, owned by the Florida A&M and Florida State University School of Engineering, to talk with resident teachers Kathy Safford-Osborne and Susan Borland as well as 2007 Leon County teacher of the Year, Jan Graham, about the Leon County schools partnership with the Challenger Center and how reading and language arts is incorporated into an interactive simulated space mission experienced by her Cobb Middle School students.

      The third show covers Florida education news and releases more results from a recent online Florida teacher survey. Host Nicole Flesvig also speaks with Dr. Connie Graunke to explore academic and career planning tools available for middle and high school students from FACTS.org, Florida's online student advising system. In addition, Teacher Talk visits Martin County High School to speak with Marshall Skinner, director of the district's career and technical education programs about the innovative career academies and signature programs offered there in Teacher Talk's first student-produced segment.

      Show 2 features 2007 Florida Teacher of the Year, Conney Dahn. Conney talks with Nicole about her experiences as a teacher of cognitively disabled children and her vision for educational programs leading to jobs and independence for her students. She also talks about her experiences as Florida’s Teacher of the Year. In addition, 2005 Duval County Teacher of the Year, Chip Leonard, talks about the importance of allowing high school students to focus on areas of interest to them in order to being relevance to their studies. Leon County student, Kelley Finn, gives feedback on the Florida “Major Areas of Interest” initiative from the student perspective.
