Meeting ScheduleCourt Ruling Update
Florida Schools of Excellence Commission News:
In 2006, the Florida Legislature gave the Florida Schools of Excellence Commission a mandate to sponsor efficient and high quality charter schools within the State's uniform system of public education. The Legislature asked the Commission to identify innovative new learning opportunities and ways to enhance student achievement around the State.Although we began strong, we regret to inform you that on December 2, 2008, the Florida First District Court of Appeal struck as unconstitutional the statute authorizing the Commission in cases related to Duval County Sch. Bd. v. State Bd. of Educ., Case No. 1D07-6041. Consequently, section 1002.335, Florida Statutes, is without effect and the Commission has been dissolved effective January 15, 2009.
If you have any questions, you may contact the Office of Independent Education and School Choice at the Florida Department of Education at (850) 245-0502.
The Commission is disappointed with the court's ruling, but we must comply with the law. The Commissioners and staff of the Florida Schools of Excellence Commission wish you well with your endeavors. Your commitment to improving public education is a commitment to make this world a better place for our children; we know of no worthier cause.
